We are on the cusp of a new era for land conservation in America. Recently, President Biden and Governor Newsom released executive orders calling for the protection of 30% of all land and water by 2030 — what’s being called the 30×30 initiatives. This has presented a unique opportunity to leverage public policy in private land conservation.
In this special report, Peter Fimrite, longtime environmental reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, offers his perspective into this movement and what it might mean for our work regionally. It is a detailed look into how land trusts, natural resources agencies and conservation districts will actively support the 30×30 goals.
Scientific research has confirmed and this public policy now reflects that land conservation is one of our greatest tools in the fight against climate change. Our living landscapes provide the best means with which to capture and store greenhouse gasses, protect biodiversity, head off mass extinctions and help prevent the kind of economic turmoil scientists have predicted as climate change worsens.
