Kick off the New Year at Peninsula Open Space Trust’s “Art & Nature” Gathering in San Jose on January 4

Event Features Exhibits by Bay Area Nature Artists, Art-making Activities, No-host Bar and Live Music by Sunny State and Sweet HayaH

PALO ALTO, Calif. (December 19, 2019) – Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) and Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority (the Authority) are partnering again – this time as hosts of a fun Art & Nature event in downtown San Jose on Saturday, January 4, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. The free, all-ages social gathering offers live music, drinks for sale, art displays and presentations featuring local nature artists, along with art-making activities for adults and kids alike.

“All across the Bay Area, people are hungry to engage with others who love nature and want to take action to protect the environment,” says Mark Medeiros, senior manager of community engagement for POST. “As we kick off the new year and a new decade, POST and the Authority want to bring people together to enjoy incredible art and music, building community around our shared passion and commitment to nature.”

The event begins at 6 p.m. at Forager Tasting Room and Eatery, with live music from Sunny State, a South Bay Band. Beer, wine, kombucha, and soft drinks will be available for purchase. Adults and kids will also have the chance to make their own nature-inspired art, facilitated by the Authority and Grit Art Tech.

Starting at 7:15 p.m., local artists and writers Obi Kaufmann (also known as Coyote Thunder), Jane Kim and Thayer Walker (also known as Ink Dwell) will be speaking and selling signed copies of their books The Wall of Birds and The State of Water. The party will continue at 8 p.m. with a performance by Sweet HayaH, a lively Bay Area band, and more opportunities to enjoy drinks, make art, and interact with our artists and event partners.

There will be a great diversity of Bay Area nature artists displaying and selling their work, including Plein Air Artist Edward Rooks, Angie Chua of Boba Design, student artists from Grit Art and Tech Association, Jerarde Gutierrez, Joaquin Newman, Cameron Moberg, Brittni Paul, and Kyrod Myatt.

Pathways for Wildlife, a research organization specializing in identifying, monitoring, and implementing connectivity designs for wildlife movement within a landscape, will be displaying videos and photos of their research on wildlife movement in the area.

The event is free, but advance reservations are strongly advised. Those who reserve in advance will receive a bandana with a custom Obi Kaufmann design at the door, while supplies last. Tickets are available at openspacetrust.org/event/artandnature.
