Home to more than 126 species of birds, Bair Island is actually three islands surrounded by a series of tidal marshes and winding waterways. Located right off Highway 101 in Redwood City, it’s also one of the last remaining easily restorable wetlands remaining in San Francisco Bay. In addition to restoring this precious habitat, Bair Island’s easy access will allow many people to visit and learn about its natural resources.
For more than 30 years, conservationists tried to save Bair Island from landfill and development. Then, in 1997, POST optioned the property for $15 million. Today Bair Island is permanently preserved as part of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Restoration of the site, a priority for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services, is expected to invite the return of several native plant, bird, and mammal species and dramatically increase habitat for the California clapper rail, California least tern, salt marsh harvest mouse, and other endangered or threatened species.
