(PALO ALTO, CA)—Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) will host an exciting evening with world-renowned chef, farmer, author and local food advocate Dan Barber on March 9 at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts. Barber’s talk will focus on topics contained in his book The Third Plate. A discussion and Q & A session with local farmers, food aficionados, open space advocates and community members will follow.
The project deepened the existing ponds to hold more water, stay wet later into dry seasons and include habitat features for different life stages of the threatened California red-legged frog. Additional improvements include agricultural infrastructure, such as fencing, pumps and troughs to bring water to cows while protecting sensitive natural resources.
Barber is the chef of Blue Hill restaurant in Manhattan and owner of Blue Hill at Stone Barns, a nonprofit farm and education center with an onsite restaurant serving unique dishes based on fresh ingredients from the surrounding fields. He was one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2009. In The Third Plate, Barber describes unique, sustainable farming operations and farm-to-table restaurants he has visited in the United States and Europe, along with the innovative farmers and chefs that run them.
Now in its 22nd year, the POST Wallace Stegner Lecture series celebrates the conservation legacy of the late Wallace Stegner, a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, Stanford University professor and ardent spokesman for the West’s wild places. Barber’s talk is the second of the 2015 lectures. The theme for this year’s series is conservation, food and farming, with an upcoming talk by Daphne Miller on May 11. Miller’s book Farmacology explores her research into how the farming methods used to grow our food have a significant impact on our health.
Beginning in 1993, Ambassador Bill Lane and his wife, Jean, generously provided underwriting for the Wallace Stegner Lectures. Jean continues the tradition of sponsorship, in memory of Bill, who passed away in 2010. Media sponsorship is provided by Embarcadero Media, publishers of Palo Alto Weekly, Mountain View Voice, The Almanac and Palo Alto Online. Additional media sponsorship is provided by Edible Silicon Valley and Metro Silicon Valley.
Tickets for upcoming lectures are $22 and can be ordered at (650) 903-6000 or by visiting www.mvcpa.com. Proceeds benefit POST’s land-saving work.
