POST Transfers Los Gatos Property to MROSD

June 26, 2015

(Palo Alto, Calif.)—Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) announced that on Friday, June 26, it formally transferred its 117-acre Hendrys Creek property to the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (MROSD). POST purchased the property for $1.5 million in two parts in September 2011 and January 2012 from a private owner who had lived on the site since purchasing it in 1976.

Like much of the surrounding landscape, the property is heavily forested, with a mix of large trees including Douglas-fir, redwoods and sycamore, as well as coast live oak and bay. Chaparral and sagebrush dot the steeply rising slopes, and trout have been spotted in Hendrys Creek, which runs the full length of the property. The creek feeds a 10-foot waterfall and additional waterfalls appear when it rains. There are also more than two dozen springs on the land.

“The Hendrys Creek property represents so many of the natural resources we prioritize for protection,” said POST President Walter T. Moore. “In particular, it connects to other protected lands in the area, providing more opportunities for safe wildlife passage and protecting water that flows into Los Gatos Creek and the Lexington Reservoir, and eventually up to the Guadalupe River and the San Francisco Bay.”

MROSD assumed management responsibilities on the property after POST’s purchase in anticipation of the transfer. MROSD is working with the Santa Clara Valley Water District to place a conservation easement on the property, and plans to add the land to the Cathedral Oaks area of its Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve.
